Appetite

By: Shelbi Henny

I've swallowed you
bit by bit
the consumption latching in the wisdom teeth
kissing my tonsils
then sliding down my throat
a fire sensation igniting in my chest
beyond the title of heartburn
causing wheezes and dry coughs
that leave no explanation
but sit in the pit of my stomach
while I gasp from weighted titanium
leaning over in agony
why does laughter seem so fitting
with streams of tears
that draw in questions of sanity
have I gone mad
or is saddens the side effect
the caution to the allergic reaction of missing you
digesting my reality
only carrying memories
yet bones touch my fingertips
I speak of you no more
but the hunger was definite
I was starving for your essence
